The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has revealed that the presidential candidate whose selfie generates the most retweets, likes and shares on the various social media platforms will be declared the winner of the 2016 presidential elections if none of the candidates is able to win a clear majority after the first round of voting.
This revelation was made at a press conference to outline the EC’s plans for the 2016 general elections. The EC contends that the “selfie vote” which will replace the emotion-charged presidential run-off, is a “simpler and easier way to decide a winner.” The “selfie vote” which will be conducted on the popular social media networks will also seek to entice young Ghanaian voters to get involved in politics.
The incumbent- John Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo- who is hoping to lead the NPP in the 2016 elections, have both released their selfies on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to gauge public reaction.
The political parties have welcomed the “selfie vote” initiative and are actively drawing up plans for an all out selfies campaign. Insiders indicate that the two largest political parties in Ghana are already considering plans to abandon traditional campaigning methods like loudspeaker rallies and radio and TV adverts in favour of the less expensive social media campaigns.
The largest opposition party, the National Patriotic Party (NPP) has reportedly engaged the services of social media experts to draft short texts and catchy hashtags to go with their selfies campaign. Our sources inside the NPP said, “the aim of our selfies campaign is to project our presidential candidate- whoever that turns out to be- as an ordinary man who is in touch with and also understands the hardships faced by the average Ghanaian. One of the drafts will be a selfie of our presidential candidate with a towel round his waist, standing next to a bucket of water. Attached to this selfie will be a text: “Last bucket of water…..bath or flash the loo?! #WaterShortage #Wahala4Sikaman”
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also recruited top social media experts and are believed to be working on some cleverly drafted texts and hashtags to bolster their selfies campaign. Our insider revealed they are working on a selfie of the president, John Mahama with the infamous dwarfs in the background. The text to be attached to this selfie will read: “It wasn’t me!! #BlameTheDwarfs #eGoBeK3k3.”
May the best selfie win!!
