ThievingHumans of Ghana

From the popular photoblog, Humans of New York, comes another spinoff, ThievingHumans of Ghana. This new photoblog was launched with a portrait and fragments of the conversation with Larry, a random gentleman who agreed to be photographed for the maiden post of ThievingHumans of Ghana.

“I’m Larry, my friends call me Lying Larry, and that is not because I’m dishonest or a liar. Others too call me Looting Larry. I am an IT consultant in Ghana but I recently worked in Brazil as the ‘eyes, ears and voice’ of the famous Weeping Elvis.”

“What does it mean to be the ‘eyes, ears and voice’ of Weeping Elvis?”

“Being the eyes of the honourable man means spotting opportunities to exploit the system. Ears- hearing when money cries so we can device schemes to rob the coffers and the voice- I am the one who concocts fairy tales to cover up the robbery.”

“Tell us something we don’t know about Lying Larry.”

“Errr I have an imaginary friend who lives in my pocket. He’s Angolan. He’s a very useful friend. One time, I needed directions to a supermarket in Brazil. Being an IT consultant, you’d think I’ll use the navigation app on my smartphone right? Nah! I chose an easier option; I simply asked my imaginary Angolan friend to give me directions to this supermarket. I paid him $4000 for his troubles. Remember this imaginary friend lives in my pocket so guess where the $4000 ended up? I’ve paid him lots more since.”

“Do you have anything else to tell Ghanaians?”

“Oh yes! Good people of Ghana, you seem outraged now, but after a week I bet you will all forget about me and my imaginary friend. You’ll simply move on to the next scandal and I will walk scot-free.”
