Football’s world governing body FIFA and recording company Sony Music Entertainment have chosen Azonto as the official anthem for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The azonto song, yet to be released, will be performed by Sarkodie, Fuse ODG and Baby Jet at the opening ceremony of the World Cup on June 12 at the Arena de Sao Paolo in Brazil. We can also confirm that former Arsenal team mates, Emmanuel Adebayo and Emmanuel Eboue will form the two man dance crew for the performance.
Readers will recall that in 2010, FIFA chose “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)”, as the official anthem for the first ever World Cup to be held in Africa. This song was co-produced and performed by Shakira, a South American singer. The decision not to choose an African song by an African artiste, was seen by many as a slap in the face for Africans on and off the continent. Hence, FIFA officials sought to rewrite themselves back into the good books of African football fans by choosing an African song for this year’s tournament being held in South America. Tit for tat is indeed fair play.
In that same spirit of fair play, Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke urged Nigerians to desist from deceiving the rest of the world into believing that they are the originators of azonto. He said “We now know azonto is clearly from Ghana and alingo is not azonto’s co-equals! If you still wish to imitate azonto, then consult the Chinese for some sound advice.”
