Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has urged FIFA to launch a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review of the controversial moment from the 2010 World Cup quarter-final between Uruguay and Ghana, when Luis Evil Suarez handled the ball to deny Ghana a winner in the last minute of extra-time.
Gyan insists that Dominic Adiyiah’s last minute header had actually crossed the goal-line before serial-cheat Luis Suarez batted the ball with his hand.
The Ghanaian captain hopes the new VAR technology can now correct one of the greatest injustices ever committed in football.
A Ghanaian fan who expressed support for Gyan’s call for a VAR review said he was hopeful that “VAR officials will conclude that the goal should have been given, and that Ghana would have gone on to win the World Cup that year.”
Another fan urged referees at the ongoing World Cup to keep an eye on Luis Suarez, explaining that “he [Suarez] cannot be trusted to play fair; once a cheat always a cheat.”
