The 2017 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards will include a Best Paid Presidential Endorser category in recognition of the huge difference these presidential endorsement deals have made to the bank balance of Ghanaian music artistes.
Presidential endorsements from musicians have, in recent months, emerged as the music industry’s most lucrative sector, with politicians reportedly paying hefty sums of money in exchange for a seal of approval from artistes who have virtually no influence over voters’ behaviour.
A statement from the organisers said the award will be given to the artiste who received the highest amount of money for the most worthless endorsement.
“Music artistes have somehow tricked politicians into believing that they (the artistes) can affect election results, and for this they deserve an award,” the statement explained.
The awards organisers also urged the general public to send their nominations for the Best Paid Presidential Endorser award.
